Presented is a screenshot from Elizabeth Wessex's old computer of the British Library icon set, developed chiefly by myself and my cohort, Elizabeth Wessex. The set contains over 540 full-size (512x512) icons for Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, which, in turn, weighs in at approximately 190 MB of PNGs. Most of these were produced over the course of a single week.

Major applications are represented with a book for an icon, to encourage regularity in their appearance (and to make additions to the list quick and harmless.)

Yes, 544 motherfucking icons. Big ones. There are one or two at smaller resolutions because they never have to be shown at full resolution.

Of more importance than just the icon set itself is the fact that a nearly-complete (if not totally so) set of system replacement images is provided. Everything from Front Row to iSync to that stupid little lock/unlock animation in the security system has been replaced. One or two programs, such as Audio/MIDI Setup, have been completely untouched because they weren't on the computer we developed this set for, but said computer has not a pixel of aqua icons or stock art anywhere. ANYWHERE.

Some day, perhaps, we'll work out a Windows version of all these things, but the degree of compatibility won't be all that high. (And you'll be limited to about 64x64 as far as usefulness goes, which will suck, unless you use huge-ass thumbnail mode in Explorer at 128x128.)

Best of all, a set of bundles will be available for OS X users with which they can replace all of their resources at once.

...but that's 297.15 MB: [link]
...so here are the source PNGs, too: [link] (They're only 191.04 MB)

It'll take a bit of time to re-release all of the components, but hopefully patience will be available amongst those eager ;)

Please witness Elizabeth's site if you look at this stuff or enjoy it. It would not be without her tireless work that this stuff exists. I may have come up with the directory and the document icons and so forth, but she packaged everything up and made it worthwhile. Her site is here: [link]

Awesome design's very olden-time looking, great work, where can i download them?
~AiOlorWile:iconAiOlorWile: Nov 26, 2007, 10:51:01 AM
They'll be available for download and installation on a Mac with Leopard in a bit over an hour. PNGs will be available about an hour and a half after that.

:omg:

This really kicks ass!
Really, you rock!
I can appreciate the amount of work that you put into this.
I'd love to be able to get the PSD's.
I'd send you a note but that's still not working here on dA, so will you please contact me via e-mail to discuss the PSD's? Thanks.

I don't suppose anyone can instruct a Leopard newbie how to get this most thorough icon set into the system?

Heck, I can't even find most of these icons outside of the CoreServices bundle, and the new CandyBar 3 doesn't seem to go too far beyond the basic application icons.

Thank you so much for these!

I'm a Windows XP/Vista/Linux user, and I would really like a set for XP/Vista as the default theme is boring and non-sophisticated.

This, however, is an eye-candy. Personally, I love old libraries and I love reading books. --Pointed to all the books in his shelf.-- Alas, as for now, I'll have to satisfy with the PNG version and manually edit it for my likings and usage. I hope you'll fix a Windows version soon enough. <3

Thank you. :+fav:
